Yes. Your international license is only good for 30 days once you enter the United States. You do not have to surrender your international licenses as you will need it when you return to your country to visit or go back home.

Yes. Every new driver must take the knowledge exam and obtain an instructional permit in order to learn to drive.

The instruction permit allows you to drive with a licensed adult 25 or older when you are practicing.

You cannot drive by yourself with an instructional permit even though you have an international license.

Once you pass the written exam either with us or at a local DMW, you will need to provide ONE of the following documents if you are considered an international visitor:

Yes you can, but you will not be able to drive it until you have vehicle insurance on it.

It is a state law in almost every state that a vehicle must have a least liability insurance.

Only a licensed driver can purchase car insurance. 

If you drive a vehicle without insurance, you can be fined and lose your license and potentially lose your vehicle.

Law enforcement officers in Iowa can ask for your proof of liability coverage at traffic stops, routine checkpoints and the scene of an crash. If you're cited for driving without insurance and don't have active coverage, the best response is to quickly pay the fine and provide proof of financial responsibility in the form of an active policy or an SR-22 coverage guarantee from your insurer. If you do this within 30 days, Iowa will dismiss your citation.

If you miss the deadline, the state will confiscate your license plates, suspend your registration and possibly impound or immobilize your vehicle on top of charging the fine.

To get your driving privileges back after a suspension, you'll need to buy an insurance policy, ask your insurer to file an SR-22 form on your behalf and pay a $15 administrative fee.

The department of motor vehicles will send you new license plates and a new registration receipt so you can drive your car again. If your car has been impounded, you will have to pay the towing and storage fees as well.

Each DOT Road test must be scheduled in advance.

The vehicle you bring must be working order and have two license plates, one on the front and the back.

The vehicle must have current registration and current insurance.

All lights, turn signals and horn must function properly.

No one can ride with you with the DOT Examiner.

Seatbelts must be worn at all times.

You will be required to pass the vision exam and answer some questions regarding your capability to drive safely.

If you utilize our driving school, you will be allowed to use the training vehicle for the DOT Road Test.

We will speak to the DOT Examiner about any mistakes you made if you should fail the Road Test.

The test is designed to ascertain if you are able to be a safe driver in all traffic situations.
